FBI agents have been investigating a possible link between Facebook, the FBI and a New Jersey man who was identified by the FBI as an FBI informant.
The investigation into the alleged FBI ties to the man, whose name was not released, began when an FBI tipster notified the FBI in October 2017.
According to the FBI’s affidavit, the tipster claimed the FBI “discussed the matter” with Facebook officials and that “the FBI had a contact on Facebook who knew [the FBI] and that he knew Facebook’s policy.”
The complaint did not identify the Facebook officials.
The New Jersey Bureau of Investigation did not respond to a request for comment.
Facebook declined to comment.
In October, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office charged that two New Jersey men were connected to the same Facebook account, which the state Attorney General said was being used to “lure” and “troll” users of the platform.
Facebook said in a statement at the time that it was aware of the case and that it has “made it clear to all our employees that they should never share personal information online.”
The alleged FBI connection was first reported by BuzzFeed News.
